Russian Marat Safin the US Open champion of 2000, fought through a tough first round match against Vincent Spadea, defeating the American 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Arthur Ashe stadium on Tuesday at Flushing Meadows.

The 28-year-old Muscovite, who defeated Pete Sampras to lift the US Open trophy in 2000, won just five points more than Spadea in the match that featured 10 breaks of serve and a total of 85 unforced errors, including 16 double faults.

Former World No. 1 Safin is currently No. 44 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, up from No. 93 on April 21. The right-hander, who has a 22-7 record at Flushing Meadows, was a first-time semifinalist at Wimbledon (l. to Federer) in July and now improves to a 20-19 match record for the season.

This week Rafael Nadal takes over from Roger Federer, who held the No. 1 spot in the South African Airways ATP Rankings for a record 237 consecutive weeks from Feb. 2, 2004, after winning his first Australian Open title, until Aug. 17, 2008.

The last player to rank No. 1 before Federer was Andy Roddick the week of Jan. 26, 2004. Nadal also ends the longest reign at No. 2, a record 160 straight weeks. Overall, this is the 86th time the No. 1 ranking has changed hands in the past 35 years.

For four years Tomas Berdych has been tagged ‘the man who beat Roger Federer at the Olympics’. That tag ought now to end after Federer gained some revenge for his Athens defeat with a 64 76(4) victory over the 22-year-old Czech.

Kuznetsova said she had been having trouble with “the mental side of things” for several weeks, and that came to haunt her in her 76(5) 64 defeat to China’s No 2 player Li Na.

Kuznetsova started well enough, taking Li’s opening service game and leading 5-2, but Li was clearly psyched up for this match. Her fortunes have slumped from her career-high ranking of 16 last year, and only now is she starting to rediscover her form after a run of stomach, rib and knee problems. This was clearly her opportunity.

After taking the first set on the tiebreak, she played a great second set, marred only by freezing when leading 5-2. At 5-4 she missed her third match point, and if Kuznetsova had saved a fourth, the match could have turned. But this was Li’s moment, and as the clock struck ten, a beautifully fluent backhand forced an error out of Kuznetsova, and Li was through to a second-round match against Marina Erakovic/Ayumi Morita.

FilAm Tennis Ace Leads UCLA to First Championship

FilAm UCLA college student Riza Zalameda double dipped during the NCAA National Tennis tournament held at the Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center last May 26.

The 22-year-old senior clinched UCLA’s first ever women’s Team Tennis Championship and also captured the NCAA Doubles Championship with partner Tracy Lin.

Zalameda clinched the team championship when she defeated Susie Babos of UC Berkeley, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The win gave the lady Bruins a 4-0 series sweep against the Bears of Berkeley and earned Zalameda the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award.

In the same tournament, Zalameda and Lin captured the NCAA Tennis Doubles Championship after defeating CSU Fresno State’s Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe in three-sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Both wins are a culmination of Zalameda’s stellar UCLA tennis career. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) named Zalameda as the Senior Player of the Year award, becoming only the second UCLA player to ever earn the prestigious award. She also earned the Pac-10 Player of the Year award.

The only thing that Zalameda didn’t do during the tournament was to win the Singles Championship. She reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles draw. Before entering the tournament, she had won the Pac-10 Singles title.

According to UCLA, Zalameda is just one of six four-time All-Americans in UCLA history.

Singles & Doubles Entries Announced For Olympics

The ITF announced on Wednesday the direct acceptance list for the 2008 Olympic Tennis Event in singles and doubles. For both men and women, this is the strongest field ever assembled in the Olympics since tennis returned as a full medal sport in Seoul in 1988.

Led by the world No. 1s, Roger Federer of Switzerland and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, 17 of the top 20 men and 18 of the top 20 women will compete in Beijing.

Fifty-six players are entered based on their South African Airways ATP Ranking as of of 9 June (following Roland Garros), with a limit of four singles players per gender per country. Players must also be in good standing with their National Association and have met the minimum participation requirements for Davis Cup and Fed Cup.

All five of the top men will compete in Beijing. In the Top 20, only Andy Roddick (USA) and Richard Gasquet (FRA) declined to participate and Fernando Verdasco (ESP) is ineligible because he is the fifth qualified player from Spain.

Some men players included in the direct acceptance list have qualified under the ITF’s entry criteria, approved by the International Olympic Committee, but their entry has not yet been confirmed by their respective National Olympic Committees. The ITF continues to object to the exclusion of these players who have worked hard to establish their ranking which is a fair, transparent and equitable means for entry for tennis athletes. The ITF is discussing this situation with the International Olympic Committee, who approved its entry criteria, with the hope that this situation will be resolved in favour of these deserving players.

In addition, included is a list of the first three eligible men who will enter the draw if there is a withdrawal by a player whose country does not have a qualified alternate.

The Olympic Tennis Event will be played from August 10-17 at the new Olympic Tennis Center in Beijing, China. The 2004 Olympic gold medallists were Nicolas Massu (CHI) in singles and and Fernando Gonzalez/Massu (CHI) in doubles. Tennis was a part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. After the 1924 Paris Games, tennis withdrew from the Olympics but returned as a demonstration event in 1984 Los Angeles and returned as a full medal sport in 1988 Seoul.
